brief history: Arrowverse Wiki for Kara Danvers
Personality:
Kara has had a very long and complicated road to becoming a hero. Originally raised in peace on Krypton, problems quickly escalated during her childhood which led to the destruction of her home planet and the deaths of all those she had loved. While it was originally her mission to go to Earth to protect her cousin, Kara’s pod was knocked off course by the wave of destruction that was Krypton exploding and she was delayed from reaching Earth for 13 years, arriving after her cousin had already grown up. He placed her with a loving family who had helped him on his own earlier path, and for the next 12 years Kara suppressed her powers as best she could to fit in and be normal.
Having to hide what made her special for all of her life, when an emergency involving a threat to her sisters' life causing Kara to reveal herself to the world and take on the role of Supergirl, Kara took to it with the aplomb of a child finally released from a closet. This exuberance without any experience led to many mistakes and missteps as Kara had to learn to be a hero, and the cost and miracles that came with that, not simply being able to become who and what her cousin, Superman was on her first day. Beyond that, also, what kind of Superhero she wanted to be, outside of his shadow.
Becoming Supergirl, also, led to several complicated entanglements. The first was the revelation of the Department of Extra-normal Operations (DEO) monitoring extra-terrestrial presences on Earth, where her sister had worked in secret for years, and the Director of the DEO, Hank Henshaw, was against Kara’s choice to stand up and be Supergirl for National City. The second was realizing her best friend, Winn, was in love with her, while she was at the same time realizing she was falling in love with her cousin’s best friend, James. It was a tumultuous time at the very least for getting her footing as a hero, but all of these conflicts led to deeper, stronger bonds with each of the people involved.
Working through these issues, while perusing the one thing she knew she was born to do — save people, and make the world a better, safer place — Kara gained more confidence in all areas of her life. She learned how to stand up for herself, and in slow steps even did so with her boss, Cat Grant. This confidence over time, as she continued to pursue being a hero in a cape, also, led to her necessity to fight wrongs of injustice on the ground as Kara Danvers. This came to head finally, after much confusion, just as her boss was leaving Cat Co, and Kara decided to take her first steps into being a reporter as well.
Kara creates deep bonds with everyone she interacts with. She and her sister Alex are incredibly close, leaning on each other in all times of trouble, and facing all challenges, professional and personal together. Hank Henshaw, who slowly came to see her merit as a hero, was revealed to be J’onn J’onzz, still DEO director, but, also, now staunch supporter who, also, fights alongside Supergirl. Though no longer together, James is still a dear friend, one of the heads of Cat Co, and fights alongside Supergirl as Guardian. Winn continued on from CatCo to a position in the DEO, still supporting her as her best friend and now as tech help for both the DEO and Supergirl in fights. She’s even had the luck of meeting, fighting beside, and befriending amazing heroes from other Earth: Barry Allen (The Flash), an instant and long time now dear friend; Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) and his team, as well as The Legends, the latter two of which she met fighting back first the attack of the Dominators and another from EarthX, which took place during Barry’s wedding.
Kara, even beyond her powers and her costume, believes in truth, hope, and justice. She believes that people at their core are innately good and that they will choose the right path, if given the ability and chance to do so, no matter how far down the wrong path they may have already gone (as we’ve seen several times, notably with people such as Livewire, Bizarro Supergirl, and her Aunt Astra). Even with this tenacious optimism at her core, Supergirl is not a pushover and she will defend against those who will not make the same choices as her, or take new ones in the right direction. She will stand up and protect those that might get hurt, always striving to make her enemies see the right or to take them out of being able to harm anyone else.
She isn’t without her own faults or bais’s either, which her last years have touched on deeply, as she’s had to face her own deeply entrenched views with Lena Luthor’s presence in National City and the legacy of the Luthor’s from her cousins’ and the world’s interactions with Lex, and her deep-seated resentment and blindness toward the Daxamites as a whole, on the arrival of Mon-El, for being the cause of the bloody war and stalemate with her planet that helped lead to its end. Each of these showed only even more how Kara, even with her deepest doubts at work, will still believe people can be more, do better, make the right choices, go forward in the right, and it’s why Lena Luthor becomes one of Kara’s dear friends (and, even, her boss as the new owner of Cat Co Worldwide) and why she both inspired Mon-El to become a better person (/hero), and why they fell in love.
The most dramatic change in Kara’s life since picking up the mantle of Supergirl came in the form of having to make a choice with protected the whole of the Earth but broke Kara’s own heart: a showdown between Supergirl and Queen Rhea of Daxamite, along with her whole army, ended in a dispersal of lead into the atmosphere of Earth making it impossible for Daxamites to survive there — including Mon-El. Kara took this choice on her part, one her cousin said even he didn’t think he would be strong enough to make, incredibly hard, trying to close off all her humanity in its wake, unable at first to come to any terms with her ability to save an entire world, but not her own heart. She has been slowly coming to terms with this and trying to open herself back up again to her friends and family around her.
